Recently, Honda has unveiled the new version of ASIMO. Although, it looks quite similar to the previous model, improvements in its mobility and control systems have been done.
In example, the weight of the new version has decreased about 6kg. This fact plus the combination of an improved control technology allow ASIMO walk, run, run backward, hop on one or two legs continuously, and walk over uneven surfaces without lost balance. Indeed, ASIMO's speed has increased in 3 km/h.
Its degrees of freedom has been increased from 34 to 57. Moreover, tactile and force sensors have been embedded in each finger and palm enabling ASIMO to perform more tasks that requires complex movements of fingers, like twisting off the cap of a bottle, pour a liquid without spilling it, and make sigh language expressions. This also let ASIMO to recognize objects and handle them appropriately applying the right amount of force without crushing it.
Multiple sensors provide ASIMO information about its surroundings, and it can autonomously determine what to do without the intervention of an operator. For example ASIMO can predict the direction that a person will walk and take the decision whether change its current path or not to avoid a collision.
