It’s been a long week, and Evolta's staff worked day and night helping the small robot to complete the course of the Ironman Triathlon. And they did it in time.
The challenge started at 12:00 p.m. on October 23. First, Evolta had to swim 3.8 Km. To acomplish this challenge a waterproof version with aerodinamic floats was used. The robot was guided by an infrared emitter located atop a surf board. Evolta took about 5 and a half hours to complete this part of the course.
After finish the swim course, the batteries were removed from the swimming version of Evolta and placed into the bike version. This time the robot had to complete a 180.2 km course. A new version of the emitter used in the Tokaido Road Challenge guided the robot this time. Evolta rode its bike through sidewalks and highways until it completed the course in about 3 and a half days.
Finally, the last part of the challenge, which consisted in running 42.2 Km, started on October 27. The run version, which looked like the one used in the Tokaido road challenge with the main difference that this time it didn't pull a cart, was powered with the same batteries and guided with the same emitter than the bike model. Evolta completed the course on October 30 after ran for about 3 days.
Evolta ran about 226.33 Km through sea and land in 166 hours and 56 minutes. The robot met the challenge succesfully, and it has become the first robot in complete the Ironman triathlon course.
